Rehab & Bioptic Driving

"I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."

- Christopher Reeve

Bioptic Driving & Rehabilitation Services

Each day, many Americans face the possibility of losing their driving privileges — or the reality that they may never qualify for licensure — due to vision impairment. The inability to drive can significantly impact mobility, employment opportunities, and overall independence.

While some vision conditions make driving unsafe or impossible, certain individuals with mild to moderate central vision loss — who retain strong peripheral vision — may qualify for bioptic driving.

Bioptic driving is a specialized method that combines a driver’s natural vision with intermittent use of a small, mounted telescopic lens designed to enhance distance clarity. Bioptic drivers rely on their regular vision approximately 95% of the time. The telescope is used briefly and strategically to identify distant details such as street signs, traffic signals, or roadway hazards — similar to the quick glance a driver makes into a rearview mirror.

Successful bioptic driving requires:

  • Professional evaluation and careful fitting of the telescopic system

  • Structured training in proper telescope use

  • Comprehensive behind-the-wheel driver instruction

Determining whether an individual is a candidate for bioptic driving involves a multidisciplinary evaluation process. This may include collaboration among low-vision specialists, physicians, occupational therapists, certified driving rehabilitation specialists, and orientation and mobility instructors. This structured process ensures that only those who can safely operate a vehicle are approved, while providing an opportunity to those who demonstrate the potential for safe, independent driving.

Southwest Safety Rehab Division

The Southwest Safety Rehab Division exists to serve individuals for whom bioptic driving may provide a pathway to greater independence, mobility, and expanded vocational opportunity.
